Purpose of Research

The purpose of this project is twofold:

(1) To explore the "gap" between transitivity alternations in English and Japanese from the viewpoint of English middle.
(2) To propose a network model of English and Japanese transitivity in both descriptive and theoretical terms.

For this purpose, we will combine Generative Grammar, English language education, and Japanese language education, and adopt the knowledge of each field of study for an analysis of middle alternation and causative alternation of both languages. In return, the outcome of the study will be applied to English and Japanese language education: the bi-directional approach of theory and practice.
In the generative framework, an elaborate account will be given of the relation of syntactic and semantic structures, especially genericity, modality, stativity, and Japanese rare-ru, te-aru, and rare-te-iru, etc. In the framework of Japanese language education, the difficulties in choosing the correct form of transitive or intransitive verbs will be explored. Our final goal is to present an integrated model through interdisciplinary collaboration.
